To make work on budgets easier, we would work in small groups and plan a party: listing everything needed including a venue, tables, chairs etc. A mind-map can help. Once the list is complete, the group put local costs beside all of the items and added up the total of what it would cost to pay for everything. There is the budget! If some things are not requiring payment, they can be included in an ‘Income’ list and those would-be costs taken off the total.

After this practice, writing a budget for a project was easier, but needed to list all of the items required, not just a salary for one worker, for example! When many items are given they can be listed as ‘contributions in kind’. Any supporter or donor is pleased to see what is given locally.
